Boric Acid For Vaginal Health
Boric acid for vaginal health — also known as boracic acid or hydrogen borate — has long been used as an antiseptic to treat minor burns, cuts, and acne. It’s also been shown to maintain the normal pH of your vagina and help keep a balance of good bacteria.
Does boric acid flush out yeast?
Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is an incredibly common infection that causes itching, burning, and a strong fishy odor. It’s usually treated with antibiotics, but it can recur in up to 50 percent of women after standard treatment.
Yeast Infections are also very common and can cause itching, redness, swelling, and pain. They’re caused by the yeast Candida albicans or candida glabrata. They can also be triggered by hormonal changes during pregnancy or in people with compromised immune systems.
If you have a recurrent infection, your doctor may recommend a vaginal boric acid suppository to help keep the yeast and bacteria under control. These suppositories are made in capsule form and inserted directly into the vagina.
The capsules must be inserted as far into your vagina as possible, so it’s not always easy to determine how much of the suppository to insert, and they should never be taken orally. In addition, they should not be used while pregnant as it can be harmful to a developing fetus.
While boric acid doesn’t work as well as antibiotics or antifungal treatments for BV, it can help prevent recurrences. Despite that, doctors don’t recommend using it on its own for the treatment of recurrent infections, as there is minimal evidence to support it and you should talk to your doctor before starting any homeopathic or natural remedies.
